Music books (paper or online) rarely provide any context for the music they contain. This page links to stories and historical facts I have discovered while putting this site together. American Old Time Music has its roots among 18th century Irish, Scottish and English immigrants, but by the 19th century it had become distinctly American. It was the commercial music of the day and was popularized in dance halls and minstrel shows.
