This tune celebrates the Barlow Knife, a common implement on the frontier. Originally designed in the mid 17th century, it was in use throughout North America in the 18th and 19th centuries.

The Barlow was a primitive mass-produced pocket knife made specifically for export. It takes its name from the Barlow family of Sheffield England whose factory produced them in great numbers.

By the end of eighteenth century it was manufactured by a number of companies.

Barlow Knives are still popular as an inexpensive  pocket knife for boys.
