The tradition of secular Jewish music was developed by itinerant musicians called kleyzmerim in the 15th century. The repertoire is mostly dance music for weddings and celebrations. Titles are in Yiddish. The fiddle was the traditional melody instrument of the kleyzmerim as they traveled throughout Eastern Europe. Klezmer bands, dominated by the clarinet date to the late 19th century.
Many of these tunes are in Gm, Dm or B Flat Major and are more easily played in the third position. They can be a challenge for fiddlers used to playing the major keys of G, D and A in the first position. However, practicing Klezmer tunes will enhance your fiddle playing skill. I found playing Klezmer really helped me with intonation and syncopation.
My personal favorite Klezmer group - check out their music!
